Cultivation and drilling covers the preparation of soil and the precise sowing of seed, creating the ideal seedbed for strong crop establishment. Proper cultivation and drilling helps improve soil structure, promotes even germination, and sets crops up for a productive season.
At McClintock Contracting Ltd, we use modern cultivation and drilling machinery operated by experienced professionals to ensure every job is completed accurately and on schedule. Whether you require ground preparation for pasture or arable crops, we provide reliable solutions tailored to your needs.
With decades of agricultural contracting experience, McClintock Contracting Ltd provides reliable cultivation and drilling services backed by modern machinery, experienced operators and precision technology.
We understand that timing and attention to detail are critical during planting. With four different drilling systems in our fleet, we have the flexibility to match the right machine to the job, soil conditions and crop. From direct drilling and roller drilling through to cultivated seedbeds and precision planting, our fleet is set up to handle a wide range of Southland conditions.
Our 4.5m Allen CD4500 is our dedicated direct drilling machine and, in our view, is an ideal direct drill for Southland conditions.
Its triple-disc system follows ground contours closely to achieve accurate seed placement across varying terrain. Three separate bins provide capacity for seed, fertiliser and slug bait, while press wheels and following harrows help achieve good seed-to-soil contact and a consistent finish.
The drill has its own crane for loading seed and fertiliser in the paddock. Paired with a high-horsepower tractor, this setup gives us the capacity to operate effectively across larger paddocks and steeper country.
Our 6.3m 4AG roller drill provides an efficient option for establishing seed while consolidating the seedbed in the same pass.
An air seeder provides even seed distribution, followed by harrows and the roller to incorporate the seed and consolidate the soil. The machine can hydraulically apply additional downward pressure, providing extra weight and soil consolidation when conditions require it. The additional down pressure also helps press stones into the seedbed, creating a smoother, more even surface.
Hydraulic scarifying paddles allow us to loosen the soil surface when a prepared seedbed has become compacted or sealed following rain, helping restore suitable conditions before the seed is incorporated and rolled.
Our Amazone power harrow combination drill allows seedbed preparation and drilling to be completed in a single pass.
It is particularly well suited to working directly behind the plough for crops such as turnips. The combination of the power harrow, levelling board and crumbler roller prepares and consolidates the seedbed before the disc coulters place the seed, with following harrows providing the final finish.
This gives us an efficient one-pass option for producing a fine, even seedbed and achieving consistent crop establishment.
Our KUHN 12-row precision planter is set up for accurate planting of crops including maize, fodder beet and swedes, with the ability to apply fertiliser at planting.
A key advantage of this planter is its low seed-drop height, helping achieve highly accurate seed spacing and consistent placement within the row. A 1.2-tonne front-mounted fertiliser tank provides additional capacity and allows fertiliser to be applied as part of the planting operation.
All four drilling systems operate with GPS autosteer technology, helping maintain accurate passes, minimise overlap and improve efficiency across the paddock.
Having four specialised drilling options means we aren’t limited to a one-size-fits-all approach. We can select the machine best suited to the crop, paddock, terrain and conditions, giving our customers a complete drilling solution from seedbed preparation through to precision planting.
Our cultivation fleet includes a range of equipment to suit different soil conditions, paddocks and seedbed requirements:
From direct drilling and roller drilling to power harrow combination drilling and precision planting, we can match the right machine to the crop, paddock and conditions.
GPS autosteer, specialised drilling technology and accurate seed placement help achieve consistent establishment while reducing overlap and unnecessary passes.
With ploughing, levelling, ripping, power harrowing and speed disc options, we can manage the full process from initial ground preparation through to drilling.
High-horsepower tractors, versatile equipment and experienced operators give us the capability to handle changing ground conditions, challenging terrain and tight planting windows.

With a range of cultivation equipment and four different drilling systems, we can work across a wide variety of Southland soil types, terrain and paddock conditions. We match the machinery and approach to the ground conditions, crop and desired result.
We consider the crop being established, soil conditions, terrain and the level of ground preparation required. With four different drilling systems available, we can select the machine best suited to your paddock rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our drilling and precision planting equipment can establish a wide range of pasture, forage and cereal crops, including grass, turnips, swedes, fodder beet, maize, kale, Raphno®, rape, wheat, barley, oats, etc. Talk to our team about what you’re looking to establish and we’ll help determine the best drilling or planting approach for your crop and conditions.
Yes. Depending on the machine and job, we can apply seed, fertiliser and slug bait as part of the drilling operation. This can reduce additional passes across the paddock and make establishment more efficient.
Absolutely. Every paddock and season is different. We can discuss your crop, soil conditions, previous paddock use and intended outcome, then recommend a cultivation and drilling approach using the most suitable equipment from our fleet.
